Some ex-lovers

Some ex-lovers
you see from time to time
and it’s great to run
into them

and some you’d like to run into
but they seem to avoid
the stretch of road you’re on
when you put
your foot down

Some ex-lovers rematerialise
as voices on the phone or
Christmas cards
while others appear in your dreams
like portents
or crisis barometers

Some you can meet for lunch
—they’re friends now
and you split the bill, and it’s safe
to hug them goodbye; or you go to their weddings
And some ex-lovers  you can’t afford to have lunch with
because you cannot make yourself believe the prefix
